A Small Change Provides a Big Impact: 2022 Impact Report

The demand for nitrogen is growing as the population continues to increase. Nitrogen is a critical component of the global food system, with synthetic fertilizer credited for supporting the food requirements for nearly half of the world’s population. But it also accounts for 2.5% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. The implications of relying on synthetic fertilizer to fuel our food supply are clear: there will be more nitrate runoff, more nitrous oxide emissions and more demand on natural gas to manufacture ammonia.

We need more efficient nitrogen to sustain our agricultural demands, farm economies and the health of our planet. Pivot Bio’s microbes are the first nitrogen breakthrough in a century, and a viable solution to the nitrogen dilemma we face. Our microbial nitrogen delivers the results growers need while improving water quality, air quality and biodiversity.

Our groundbreaking crop nutrition platform improves productivity and profitability for farmers without polluting local rivers or contributing to climate change, and we have the data to back it up. Our inaugural 2022 Impact Report, along with university research and other third-party results, documents how the technology is transforming agriculture to the benefit of farmers and the planet.

This new data, measuring the early impact of our sustainable nitrogen, shows that Pivot Bio’s products helped customers replace over 32,000 tons of synthetic nitrogen, avoiding emissions of approximately 226,400 metric tons of CO2e — equivalent to the electricity use of 44,000 U.S. homes for a year.

In addition, recently published independent and university studies further demonstrate the benefits our products provide to farmers, including maintaining or increasing crop yields for additional revenue per acre. Key takeaways include:

  • Nitrate leaching can be reduced by an average of 10 kilos of nitrogen per hectare (~ 9 pounds per acre) with the use of PROVEN 40
  • When combined with our proprietary carbon additive, corn treated with PROVEN 40 could increase its yield average by up to 11 bushels per acre
  • The use of PROVEN 40 led to higher yields and about $12.50 per acre in additional revenue

To further our sustainability efforts, we joined the Agriculture Innovation Mission (AIM for Climate), a global effort to accelerate research and development in climate smart agriculture technology where we committed to investing at least $291 million in product development over the next four years.

We also partnered with Emitwise to calculate our Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint and offset 100% of our Scope 1 and 2 emissions with credits purchased from our N-OVATOR program.

At Pivot Bio, we take the long view, thinking about our impact in terms of what we will pass down to the generations to follow. We exist to serve farmers — to help every farm be more profitable and to provide them with a new tool as they work to protect our natural resources for the benefit of the entire planet and all who call it home. This report is our opening statement on Pivot Bio’s impact. We’re excited to see where this journey will take us in partnership with the world’s farmers.
